Laser hair removal reduced the amount of hair and diminishes its colour, because the laser destroys the cells that produce keratin and melanin in the hair. As a result, with repeated sessions, it is possible to reduce or even permanently prevent the growth of new hair. There are various factors that can affect the quality of a hair removal treatment. Patients with lighter skin are the best candidates for achieving permanent results, as higher fluence values can be applied. The higher the power of the laser, the more cells can be eliminated and the better the results of the hair removal will be.

Laser hair removal only has one common side effect, which is reddening and mild inflammation of the skin around the hair, as a result of the intense heating of the hair which later causes it to fall out. This is an immediate sign of the effectiveness of the treatment. This effect may be accompanied by post-treatment itching and typically subsides within a few hours or days. Another uncommon effect is reddening of the entire treatment area. This only occurs if the parameters used are higher than those recommended for the skin type or with tanned skin, it also resolves within a few days.

There are several reasons why laser hair removal requires multiple treatment sessions. Firstly, during a treatment only hair that is in the growth phase (anagen phase), can be treated. Secondly, removing all the hair cells in a single session is not possible; most are eliminated in the initial sessions and those that remain are removed in further sessions.

The number of sessions will depend on the area being treated, the thickness and colour of the hair, the phototype of the skin and the particular needs of each patient. But more than anything else, it will depend on the power of the laser, since when the laser power is higher more cells can be eliminated in each session.

The average recommended amount is 8-12 sessions, intervals of every 4 – 6 weeks depending on the area being treated. Maintenance can be done 1 – 2 sessions per year, some people need less and some people need more.

Pacemaker or internal defibrillator

Active skin infections (open cuts and wounds, psoriasis and eczema)

Metal pins and plates in the treated area (can work over teeth fillings)

Sunburnt skin

Waxing done within the last 4-6 weeks

Botox and fillers done within the last 2 weeks

Deep chemical peels or laser resurfacing treatments in the last 3 months

Any surgical procedures in the last 3 months

Skin disorders (e.g. keloids, abnormal wound healing)

Use of medication, such as Roaccutane, topical cortisone and antibiotics.

Current cancer (any type) or history of cancer

Pregnancy and nursing

Diseases stimulated by light, like epilepsy, lupus and porphyria

Concurrent cardiac disorders

Endocrine disorders- poorly controlled diabetes and thyroid pathologies

Illness that supresses the immune system, for example HIV-Aids

It is advisable to avoid any sun exposure for 2 weeks before treatment (including “Tan cans” etc.)

Avoid using self-tanning creams or hair bleaching products, 15 days before the session.

Report any treatment or active substance that you are subjected to, especially those mentioned as photosensitive agents.

It is advisable to shave the area one day before the treatment (to also avoid irritation to the skin on the day of treatment).

Avoid applying cosmetics to the treatment areas, except sunscreen

Avoid swimming, particularly in pools containing chemical products

No waxing, epilating or tweezing in between laser hair removal sessions

Avoid Jacuzzis and saunas

Activities that lead to excessive sweating or any activity that can elevate core body temperature

Exposure to the sun or tanning in the treatment areas. Apply a sunscreen with a protection factor of at least SPF 50 to prevent alterations in skin colour

Vigorous scrubbing or the use of exfoliants in the treatment areas

Normal bathing or showering, as the treatment areas may be sensitive to temperature

If any dark lesions appear, do not pick or pull at them as this may lead to scars.
